Nothing sucks more than digging through your toolbag at night for that one wrench you need to fix whatever side-of-the-road malady you’re in with nothing more than the light from your cell phone – but there’s a solution! Carabiners, which can be found at dollar stores or online for dirt cheap, can keep your box-end wrenches tied together while being thrown around.
Yes, tool rolls get the job done, but we find them a bit bulky for a compact emergency kit, and tools can still slide out on occasion. Using carabiners through the box-end, you can keep your wrenches together with the sizes in their proper order. You can even think about what sizes you actually need to carry for your vehicle, removing the sizes that don’t fit anything on your car, so you can slim down the amount of tools, and weight, you’ll be carrying – or, used colored carabiners for quick metric or standard identification so you can take the whole family of wrenches to the junkyard!
This is also a handy way to keep the wrenches that you would normally have scattered under the car on a saturday morning together as well, keeping on-clip only what you need for the job. Take it from the mechanic who learned the hard way: Organization, and keeping to a system that returns the right things to the right spots, makes your life so much easier! Time, energy, and stress aren’t wasted on “where the f#%& is that 5/8 I just had!?” Instead, you can burn that time, energy, and stress on “Okay, I’ve replaced everything and it still won’t start. Why? Why don’t you start?”
Wrenchin’ Wednesday is a weekly garage-hackamajig, making wrenching great again with small tips that make working on your project easier, cheaper, and maybe even a bit faster. We’re probably not the first with any of these ideas, but you won’t be the last to know every Wednesday!
